. What is magnetic therapy?

Magnetic bracelets are becoming increasingly popular as a form of complementary health, helping a wide range of health problems. Magnet Therapy is used as a non-medical treatment to help relieve pain and increase the body's natural healing process for faster recovery time. It is believed that magnets, when applied to the injured area, improve blood flow and oxygen levels thus reducing inflammation and enhancing the body's natural healing process. It is also suggested that the magnetic field may block pain signals to the brain. There have been recent breakthroughs in studies using magnetic therapy. In November of 1997 a study was conducted at Baylor College of Medicine. Due to the favourable results, this study was published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

How do magnets work?

Pain relief is the most common use of magnets. Magnets increase the capillary blood flow which may help flush lactic acid and other inflammatory agents that build up tissue to ease pain and inflammation. The blood supply also carries oxygen which may be helpful in relaxing muscles and relieving cramps and spasms which are oxygen starved.

This is the same reason massage is often used to loosen muscles in spasm; to allow blood to flow and deliver oxygen necessary to terminate the spasm.
